What to bring
Pack casual, comfortable easy-wear clothing and good walking shoes. (Mexican residents tend to dress informally, but conservatively).
Evenings are cool from October to February, so bring a sweater or light jacket and warm trousers or jeans.
Don't forget your camera. There's a photo opportunity everywhere you look! Be discreet when photographing the local Mexicans. Always ask for permission. There are several 1 hour photo processing outlets in San Miguel.
Getting there
There are regular international flights to Mexico City and Leon. From Mexico City it is a four hour bus ride to San Miguel; from Leon, it is an hour and a half.
From Mexico City airport, you can take a bus to Queretaro (about one hour from San Miguel) and connect there.
We can recommend "Viajes San Miguel" travel services for advance bus reservations. This company offers shuttle service to and from Mexico City and Leon airports. Email: travelsm@prodigy.net.mx
There are several direct buses to San Miguel from the Mexico City bus depot "Central de Autobuses del Norte".
Electricity
Electrical current, plugs and sockets are the same as in the U.S.A. and Canada: 110 volts, 60 cycles, using flat 2-pronged plugs.
Credit Cards
Most of the larger restaurants and shops accept major credit cards.
Currency
The Mexico unit of currency is the peso. Banks and casas de cambio in San Miguel will exchange U.S. currency or travelers cheques. We recommend having a passport to make money changing easier.
Things to buy
San Miguel has several markets selling local arts and crafts. Locally produced items include tincraft, glass, ceramics, wrought iron, brass, silver and textiles. Also, some of the best folk art and handicrafts from elsewhere in Mexico are available in San Miguel.
